9 million euro ear-marked for extra investment in Brussels Orbital
The Flemish Transport Minister Ben Weyts (nationalist) has ear-marked a further 9 million euro for investment in so-called “quick wins” on the eastern section of the Brussels Orbital Motorway. The Brussels Orbital Motorway is, after the Antwerp Orbital, the busiest motorway in Flanders and is often the scene of traffic jams.
There have been plans to improve the situation for a number of years now. 3 billion euro is to be invested in the northern section of the motorway with through traffic set to be separated from local traffic. Here the work has already started. The Flemish Government is also investing in extra cycle infrastructure and a new trambus service in an effort to persuade some motorists to leave their cars at home.
The work on the eastern section of the motorway will consist of a series of so-called “quick wins”, relatively small changes designed to improve the fluidity of traffic. The Leonard Crossroads and the Vier Armen Crossroads, both on the boundary of Tervuren (Flemish Brabant) and Brussels, are two locations where work will be carried out.
In addition to this the Jezus-Eik interchange on the E411 will be relocated to stop traffic heading for the motorway having to go through the centre of the village. The will also be extra investment in cycle infrastructure in the areas of Flemish Brabant adjacent to Brussels.
