Average age at Belgian coast to go up considerably
The average age of the people living at the Belgian coast is to increase considerably in the next 15 years. Over 50 per cent of the total population will be over 56 years of age, a study ordered by the province of West Flanders reveals.
At present, 92,512 people living at the Belgian coast are over 56. This equals 43 per cent of the local population. Over 25 per cent is over 65. Research has shown that the number of 56+ residents will increase to 177,777 which is 52 per cent of the total population by 2030.
Another striking figure could be that some 40 per cent of the houses and condos at the Belgian coast are a second residence. In actual figures, we are talking about 86,000 dwellings. Most owners are above 45: 3 in 4 are 55+ years of age.
The many people arriving at the Belgian coast to stay are dubbed 'pension migrants'. While its mostly older people arriving, the young tend to leave the area to flock to inland cities.
