Police carry out migrant checks in West Flanders

Police in West Flanders launched a major operation targeting migrants eager to make a fresh start in the UK last night.

In the south of the province twenty-five officers from Kortrijk, Wevelgem and Mennen checked lorries and trains to make sure no migrants were hiding anywhere.  The operation had been meticulously planned and came at the request of the federal police.  Checks were carried out on the E17 motorway at Marke on vehicles coming from France and at industrial zones in Kuurne, Wevelgem and Rekkem.  Kortrijk Station too was checked.  The police operation helps to map out and manage the problem of so called transit migrants.  Results of the operation have not yet been released.
