Police shoot man wielding a sword

Police in Brussels have shot dead a man in his 50’s who was acting aggressively while wielding a sword. The man died of his injuries. The police had received a call from the man’s elderly parents that he was behaving very aggressively in the flat that they shared.  

On their arrival the police officers saw that the man was in possession of “a kind of sword”, a Judicial Authorities Spokesperson told journalists.

"The suspect had used his weapon to smash a window and was trying to jump through it. The police officers tried to negotiate with him and asked him several times to put down the sword”.   

The man attacked a police officers who shot him several times in the stomach. He died of his injuries on Saturday morning. The police officer was uninjured.   

The Judicial Authorities, the police’s Internal Control Service and the police watchdog Committee P have all launched investigations.
