100,000 people watch National Day military parade

Around 100,000 have watched the military parade that was held to celebrate Belgium’s National Day on Sunday afternoon. The figures come from the Brussels-Capital-Elsene Local Police Service.

The traditional National Parade got under way at 4pm with the military parade. This included soldiers on foot, army veterans, members of the Belgian Navy and a fly over by the Belgian Airforce. The theme of this year’s parade is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Belgium from Nazi occupation. Around twenty military vehicles from 75 years ago took part in the parade. These included the Sherman Firefly and the Sherman M4 A1.

After the military parade came the civilian parade. This included participants from the police and customs services, the fire service, the civil protection services, the B-FAST rapid intervention unit and the Red Cross. The slogan of this year’s parade is “Together for the freedom and security of all of us”

Meanwhile, Party in the Park is in full swing. In addition to the festivities in the Warande Park, there are stands and activities in the whole area between the Royal Palace and the Brussels Courthouse, all of which are free of charge.
