Plenty of chances but no goals as Anderlecht fail to score against 10-man KV Mechelen

Sporting Anderlecht’s poor start to the season continued on Friday evening. Their goalless draw against newly-promoted KV Mechelen on Friday evening leaves them with just 2 points from their first three games. The goalless draw came despite Anderlecht playing more than half the match with a man more after the KV Mechelen keeper Yannick Thoelen was sent off just before half time.

A well-organised KV Mechelen defended like lions and as the second half wore on the realisation dawned that they might just take a point. KV Mechelen’s substitute goalkeeper Sofian Bouzian, himself a former Anderlecht youth player also put in a more than respectable performance in Friday’s game.

Once again Anderlecht’s inability to score cost them points. For the time being the fans are still behind the team. However, the big question is how long this will last. Meanwhile, the Club former Chairman Roger Vanden Stock and its current Chairman Marc Coucke are engaged in a very public war of words in the newspapers.

The situation couldn’t be different at KV Mechelen. The club that was promoted at the end of last season has put in excellent performances.

With two wins, including a victory against the League Champions KRC Genk, and Friday evening’s draw at Anderlecht Malinwa have taken 7 points from their first 3 games and are now top of the league. However, this is likely to change once this weekend’s other games have been played.
