N-VA has a problem with UN Migration Pact
Last September Belgian premier Charles Michel (Francophone liberal) promised the general assembly of the United Nations that Belgium would approve the UN Migration Pact. Even though the pact is not binding Mr Michel's commitment has become a bone of contention in the federal government.
On Monday morning the main Flemish coalition partner, the Flemish nationalist N-VA, indicated that the content of the pact was "particularly problematic" for the party. The pact is a global treaty enshrining the rights of migrants. In December countries meet in Marrakesh to approve the pact, but in several countries opposition to the pact is growing.
Here the N-VA is worried about the legal implications of the pact. The party believes the pact conflicts with Belgian government policy and the party's view on migration.
