Hit and run suspect given conditional bail

A man detained in connection with a hit and run accident that left a 14-year-old girl with serious injuries has been released on conditional bail.  Thursday the man failed to stop after having knocked down a 14-year-old girl on a zebra crossing in the Brussels municipality of Schaarbeek. He has a previous conviction for hit and run. He is also currently the subject of a driving ban. He was driving a hire car when he mowed down the schoolgirl.

The girl was crossing over a zebra crossing at the junction of the Waelemstraat and the Helmetsesteenweg when she was knocked down. She was rushed to hospital where her condition is now described as stable. The motorist that knocked her down drove off, but was later detained.

He was being questioned by an Examining Magistrate. The Judicial Authorities requested that he be kept in custody on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and driving away from the scene of an accident. However, he was granted conditional bail.
