Care home seniors organise car wash to pay for their trip to Blankenberge

The parking lot of the residential care home ‘Zonnebloem’ in the Ghent district of Zwijnaarde was turned into a carwash today. The carwash was staffed by residents of the care home eager to raise cash and pay for a trip to the seaside this summer.

Flemish seaside resorts attract tourists from at home and abroad. 15 residents of a residential care home in Zwijnaarde are determined to join their number. They have opted for the popular resort of  Blankenberge for their week away from home.

But trips costs money, so they wanted to raise some extra cash. They brainstormed, a candy sale got the thumbs down, but the seniors warmed to the idea of setting up a carwash for the day.

All day long today they are washing cars in the parking lot of their care home. "Contributions are voluntary, but we are hoping for 10 euros per car," says a member of staff. "We mainly want to raise money to pay for extras during our trip to the seaside. For example, the residents like a cone of ice cream once in a while, but a little extra budget is also always welcome."

The residents got very excited about the car wash: "I used to wash cars with my dad” says one resident. “Otherwise we always just sit in our room, and now we can do something outside". "Although, we don’t intend to organise a car wash every week either” laughs another resident, "Once is great fun, but once will be enough."

Unfortunately the seniors hope to get away with doing this only once a year.
