Belgium gives England a lesson in hockey and earns a place in the final

Belgium’s national men’s hockey team the Red Lions have made it to final of the Hockey World Championships in India. The Belgians won their semi-final against England 6-0. Belgium will take on the winners of the other semi-final  The Netherlands.  The Dutch team beat Australia in a shot-out after their match had ended 2-2. 

It will be the Red Lion’s first ever appearance in a final. The Belgian team all wore black armbands as a mark of respect to team member Simon Gougnard’s father who died last night.

In what was nothing short of a walkover Tom Boon scored the first of 6 Belgian goals on 8 minutes. Belgium’s second goal came from a Simon Gougnard (photo below) penalty corner on 19 minutes. Cédric Charlier made it 3-0 to Belgium on 42 minutes.

Two Alexander Hendrinckx penalty corners on 45 and 50 minutes saw Belgium goal 5 goals up. Sébastien Dockier’s 52 minute goal made England’s humiliation complete. England 0-6 Belgium and the Red Lions through to the final. .
