Mayor of Knokke has “interesting” chat with President Trump at Irish golf club
The Mayor of the West Flemish coastal municipality of Knokke-Heist has had what he described as “a very interesting” chat with the US President Donald J. Trump. Count Leopold Lippens (77) has been Mayor of Knokke for the past 40 years. Like President Trump, Count Lippens is somewhat controversial, having in the past called for illegal immigrants to be locked up in camps like Guantanamo Bay and declared that the welfare state is a thing of the past.
Count Lippens and President Trump met up in the club house of an exclusive golf club in Ireland. They are reported to have conversed for around 10 minutes. President Trump was on his way day from a state visit to the UK.
On Monday last week Mr Trump and his wife Melania dined with the British Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace in Londen. On Wednesday the Trumps flew to Shannon in Ireland for a meeting with the Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar. He then visited the exclusive golf club he owns at Doonbeg in County Clare. It was there that the two politician met over a drink in the club house.
When asked about their conversation Count Lippens was uncharacteristically reticent. He would only tell Radio 2 West Flanders that they had talked about golf courses that he and President Trump had played at. He said that his conversation with the world’s most powerful man was “interesting, but not important”.
