Beach murder reconstruction held in Knokke

A reconstruction of the events surrounding the murder of Sofie Muylle has taken place in the West Flemish municipality Knokke. Ms Muylle’s body was found on a beach at the coastal resort on 22 January 2017. An initial autopsy found that she had been killed sometime during the previous night. She had been on a night out with her boyfriend.

On 26 June 2017 Alexandru C., a Romanian national that was the subject of a European arrest warrant was arrested in Romania. CCTV footages showed a man wearing a blue jacket that hung around the place where the body found for hours.

The suspect’s DNA was found on Sofie Muylle’s body. However, Alexandru C. maintains that he did not kill her, although he does admit raping her. A report by Judicial Authorities’ medical experts suggests that that it is possible that Sofie Muylle wasn’t murdered at all.

Alexandru C. has been remanded in custody on suspicion of rape, torture and assault resulting in death. If he is cleared of murder, he could still face up to 30 years in prison for the above-listed offences.

The Judicial Authorities say that the suspect cooperated with the reconstruction that took more than 4 hours.

The reconstruction was held to create more clarity about the precise circumstances surrounding what happened on the night of Sofie Muylle’s murder.
