Woman dies in Brussels flat fire

A woman has been killed in a fire in a flat in the Brussels municipality of Etterbeek. The cause of the fire in the flat on the Eskadronstraat is as yet unknown. The Brussels Fire Service received reports of a fire in the 5th floor flat at around 10:30pm on Sunday. When fire-fighters arrived at the six-story building there was already a lot of smoke.

As the front door or the flat was armoured, it was decided to first tackle the blaze through the windows while efforts were made to break down the door.

Fire fighters found the charred remain of a woman that lived in the flat. The residents of the other flats in the building had been evacuated before the fire service arrived.

The flat has been declared uninhabitable, as have the flats on the third and fourth floors that have both suffered water damage.
