Night clouds stun in the Low Countries

Early birds and people coming home late were in for a treat earlier today as night clouds were lit up.  Many photos of the phenomenon are being circulated on social media.

What people saw is a rare phenomenon limited to this part of the year.  Cloud occurs at high altitude, some 80kms above our heads.  When the sun doesn’t dip too far under the horizon the clouds still pick up sunlight even after the sun has set.  Clouds become silvery and white and not the usual grey.  It’s been years since this phenomenon was so visible in the Low Countries.
