7 detained in Antwerp cocaine haul investigation

The Antwerp Judicial Authorities have detained seven suspects in connection two large consignments of cocaine were found in containers at Antwerp Docks last year. The suspected drug smugglers have been detained as part of the ongoing investigation into those responsible for 2.7 tonnes of cocaine that was intercepted at the port of Antwerp in June and December of last year.  

On 13 June 2018 customs officers seized 317.8kg of cocaine. On 19 December 2018 2.425 tones was seized at the port.  

The two hauls of cocaine were found to be linked. Last week the Judicial Authorities searched a number of properties. A number of people were detained, including a father and his son-in-law.  

On Monday magistrates remanded three of the seven in custody. A custody hearing for two other suspects has been postponed by a week. The remaining two will learn whether they are too remain in custody later on Tuesday.
