KRC Genk through to Europa League knock-out stage

KRC Genk will join Club Brugge in the knock-out stage of the UEFA Europa League after an impressive 4-0 home win against the Norwegian side Sarpsborg. A goalless draw away Akisar Belediyespor was not enough to see last season’s cup winners Standard de Liège through to the knock out stage.

Sporting Anderlecht also drew 0-0 away at Dimano Zagreb. However, their fate had already been sealed.

Two goals each in the first and second half saw KRC Genk qualify for the knock out stage in style. Zinho Gano opened the scoring for Genk on 3 minutes. Joseph Paintstil made it 2-0 to Genk 3 minutes later. Genk were dominant and the half ended 2-0 to Genk.

Second half goals by Sander Berge on 65 minutes and Joseph Aidoo on 68 minutes made for a final score of 4-0 in Genk’s favour. KRC Genk finished 1st in Group I with 11 points from 6 games.

Standard finished 3rd in Group J with 10 points from 6 games.

Anderlecht’s tally of 3 points sees them finish their Europa League campaign bottom of Group D.
