OXY Building in the Brussels' downtown stands ablaze (VIDEO)
Fire broke out in the OXY Building in the centre of Brussels this morning. The OXY Building is the former Muntcentrum (Centre Monnaie) at the end of the Nieuwstraat. Firefighters quickly had the blaze under control; fortunately nobody was hurt. The iconic office building, which formerly housed offices of the postal services group Bpost and the City of Brussels' administrative services is being converted into new offices, housing, restaurants and a shopping mall.
The fire started in the old ventilation system in the OXY Building on the side of the Anspachlaan. While fire-fighters tackled the blaze, the police cordoned off the area around the building for a time.
The administrative services of the City of Brussels and the headquarters of Bpost were located in the Muntcentum until the end of 2022. The City of Brussels services then moved to the brand new Brucity Building, a few hundred meters away, and Bpost moved across the street. Since then, the building has been the subject of a transformation operation turning it into a multifunctional building with offices, restaurants and apartments.
