Brussels hit-and-run driver hands himself in

The driver of a car that was involved in a hit-and-accident in Brussels on Sunday morning has handed himself in to police. The Brussels Judicial Authorities report that the man is being questioned. He is reported to known to police, but not for motoring offences. The victim of the accident was a 21-year-old Romanian man.   

The accident happened at around 5am on Sunday morning near to the Rogierplein in Central Brussels. The victim, a pedestrian, was knocked down by the car as he was crossing the road. He died of his injuries at the scene. The driver failed to stop.

On Monday afternoon the driver handed himself in to police in Brussels. The Public Prosecutor has detained him and he is being questioned by police. The suspect is a man in his 20’s. He is reported to have had brushes with the law in the past, albeit not for motoring offences.

The Judicial Authorities have appointed an Examining Magistrate to look into whether the suspect is guilty of involuntary manslaughter, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and endangering pedestrians.
