Busy days at the National Bank as Belgians rush to change their francs into euro

Reports in the media earlier this week that almost 17 years after the introduction of the Euro, 16 billion Belgian francs are still in circulation have sent Belgians flocking to the National Bank in Brussels to get their francs changed into euro.

On Thursday an unprecedented 69 people turned up at the National Bank to change their francs into euro. Belgian francs worth 19,336 euro were exchanged yesterday.

On a normal day just one or two people visit the National Bank to change Belgian francs into euro. The rush to exchange francs into euro is expected to continue into the next few days. Around 400 million euro’s worth of Belgian francs is still in circulation.
