Brussels public transport company wins European safety prize

The Brussels public transport company MIVB has been awarded the European Transport Safety Council’s (ETSC) Praise Award. The Praise Award rewards companies for their efforts to improve traffic safety. The ETSC awarded MIVB the prize in the “public sector” category. The Brussels public transport company’s efforts to make tram traffic safer were especially praised.

In recent years the number of accidents involving trams in Brussels has fallen dramatically. This has resulted in fewer delays to services and a more satisfied travelling public.

MIVB’s experimental signalling system at roundabouts. Where the system has been installed it has succeeded in reducing the number of accidents by half.

At the start of the autumn, MIVB always holds an awareness campaign on the dangers posed by trams. This year’s campaign, that includes school visits, got under way last week.
