Met Office issues yellow alert for heavy rain, but summer to come back next week
The Belgian Met Office has issued a yellow alert warning members of the public against heavy rain and possibly treacherous roads or local floods. One motorist passed away on the A12 Motorway.
The yellow warning applies especially to central and eastern parts of the country. All provinces are concerned except for West Flanders. The yellow alert will be valid until 6 PM, when the rain will have moved to Germany. Western parts of the country could have drier spells from noon.
The yellow alert is the lowest on a scale of 3, followed by orange and red. It means that roads may become dangerous after several hours of rain, and that local floods may be possible.
The VRT's weather presenter Frank Deboosere says "some parts will have to swallow 20 to 25 litres of water per square metre. The Ardennes region will have rain almost the whole day." He adds that this is in fact good news for nature, as water levels still remain below par in many regions.
As from tomorrow, the weather will become dry and we will enjoy long spells of sunshine, though some clouds may appear as well. Temperatures will climb steadily to reach 25 degrees on Thursday and Friday.
Young man dies
In Londerzeel, north of Brussels between Dendermonde and Mechelen, a 23-year-old from Antwerp died in a traffic accident as a result of the wet weather this morning. The driver lost control of his vehicle and ended up in the crash barrier on the A12 Motorway. It is believed that the wet road surface and excessive water caused the accident. The victim was alone in the car, and the accident did not involve other vehicles.
