Grenade explodes in the centre of Willebroek

A shisha bar in the town of Willebroek (Antwerp province) has been severely damaged in a hand grenade attack early on Monday morning.  No one was injured in the incident that happened at around 5am. The shisha bar is located on the August Van Landeghemstraat in the centre of the town that is located around 18km south of Antwerp.

Although no one was injured, the material damage is considerable. The widows of the bar and an adjacent building have been severely damaged and the widows of a number of commercial premises on the other side of the street were also damaged.

The bomb disposal service DOVO and the forensic lab were dispatched to the scene. Meanwhile, the Federal Judicial Police have opened an investigation. The street has been cordoned off temporarily. The identity of the person that threw the grenade is still unknown.

However, this is the second time that a grenade has been thrown at the shisha bar. The previous incident was in April of the last year. The attack then is believed to have been linked to violence between Antwerp drug gangs.
