Compensation at last for thalidomide victims
After almost 60 years the Federal Cabinet has finally decided that a fund should be set up to compensate the victims of the drug thalidomide. The drug was prescribed to pregnant women from the late 1950’s until 1962 as a cure for morning sickness. It later emerged that the drug caused major deformities to unborn children inside the womb. An estimated 35 thalidomide victims are still alive in Belgium.
