Not the start player-coach Vincent Kompany had hoped for with Anderlecht: "We have no excuses"

In football, Anderlecht were whipped 4-2 bij modest KV Kortrijk last night. The Brussels club of newly-arrived coach Vincent Kompany only picked up 2 points from 4 matches and is still waiting for a first win this season. Kompany says there is no reason to panic: "If we keep playing our game, we will get what we deserve."

After leaving Manchester City last summer, Vincent Kompany started a new chapter in his career as player-coach with Anderlecht. The club was in a big crisis when he arrived, taking only 6th place last season and missing European football for the first time in 56 years.

Kompany knew it wouldn't be easy but took on the challenge because he would get the freedom to change things. He puts the focus on ball possession and a swift ball circulation. This puts Anderlecht in a scoring position, but they need too many chances to make a goal, while easily conceding goals in defence. The game in KV Kortrijk was a good example of this, Anderlecht led 0-1 after a good first half, but got whipped after the break, 4-2.

We have no excuses

"We have no excuses", Kompany told reporters. "The second half was well below par. This is possible with a young group, but you don't expect things to be so drastic. One thing is for sure: we will keep focussing on ball possession. If we need 10 chances to score a goal now, we will make sure we have 20 chances next time."

In other action, runners-up Club Brugge had a frustrating evening against KAS Eupen on Friday. Club Brugge claimed a penalty against a defensive opponent but only had themselves to blame: 0-0 and the first points lost this season. Champions RC Genk prevented a crisis by beating Waasland-Beveren 0-4.
