Woman dies after her electric wheelchair leaves the road and lands in a ditch

An evening out ended in tragedy for a 70-year-old woman from the West Flemish municipality of Ardooie. The woman was returning home when her electrically-powered wheelchair left the road and ended up in a ditch. She died at the scene. The exact circumstances surrounding the accident are the subject of an investigation. There is no indication that the wheelchair was involved a collision.      

The women was returning home from the village of Emelgem when here wheelchair left the road and ended up in a ditch on the Meulebekestraat in Inzegem.  

Carl Vyncke of the Riho Local Police Service told journalist "The victims was found at around 10:45pm by some people that live in the street. She had landed under her wheelchair in the ditch and was not showing any sign of life”.   

The woman’s daughter was also on her way home along the same route. She was stopped by the people that had found her mother in the ditch.  

"What exactly happened is still unclear. However, no evidence was found of there having been a collision and there was no visible damage to the wheelchair”, Mr Vyncke added. .  

A police surgeon has been appointed to find out the precise cause of death.
